What is the GST Portal?

The GST portal was launched by the Government of India as a one-stop platform for all GST-related services. It allows taxpayers to complete GST registration, file returns, make tax payments, claim refunds, respond to notices, and manage compliance online without visiting tax offices.

Designed to simplify GST compliance and reduce paperwork, the portal provides real-time updates, technical support, and easy access to various GST services. It enables eligible taxpayers to manage their GST obligations independently, making the compliance process more efficient and transparent.

How to Register on the GST Website?

The first step after receiving your GST certificate is to register on the Indian GST portal. Once registered, you can conveniently file GST returns, make tax payments, and access various GST-related services online. Here are the steps you need to follow:

  • Navigate to the "Services" tab and select "Registration" followed by "New Registration.

  • Click on "New Registration." Give the necessary information and attach the required files.

  • Upon completion of the form, you will be given a One-Time Password (OTP). Enter the OTP and captcha code, then click "Proceed.".

  • Upon successful submission, an Application Reference Number (ARN) will be generated for tracking your application status.

  • Once your application is approved, you will receive your GSTIN, username, and password, which can be used to access the GST portal.

Log in as a New User:

Your first login to the GST portal is treated as a New User login. Follow the steps below to log in as a new user:

  • Visit the GST portal and click on the "Login" option available at the top-right corner of the homepage

  • On the login page, click the "First Time Login" link if you are accessing the portal for the first time

  • You will need to enter the provisional ID, GSTIN, or UIN, as well as the password that was sent to your email address. Then enter the captcha code and click "Login.

  • You will be redirected to a page where you can create a new username and password of your choice. Re-enter the password for confirmation and click "Submit".

  • Once the username and password have been successfully generated, a notification indicating the process was successful will be shown. You can then use the new username and password for future logins to the GST portal.

  • During your first login, you may be prompted to complete a non-core amendment application to update your bank account details. Click on the "File Amendment" option to proceed.

  • On the amendment page, select "Add New" under the bank account section, enter the required details, and submit the application.

Log in as an Existing User

You will create a username and password for your GST account on the Portal. All the subsequent logins for filing and depositing your GST collections will use the login ID and password under the existing user section. Follow the steps below to log in as an existing user:

  • Visit the official GST portal at gst.gov.in

  • Click on the "Login" button available on the homepage

  • Enter your username, password, and captcha code in the respective fields

  • Click on the "Login" button to access your GST account

  • After a successful goods and service tax login, you will be redirected to your dashboard, where you can view GST credits, file returns, make tax payments, check your Annual Aggregate Turnover (AATO), access notices and orders, and view saved forms

Forgetting your GST login password is common and can be resolved easily through the GST portal. You should keep the password stored in a vault or a safe digital locker. Also, follow the steps given below to change your GST login password. You will need your registered mobile to receive OTP:

  • On the GST login portal, click on the "Forgot Password" link.

  • Enter the username associated with your GST account.

  • Provide the captcha code displayed on the screen and click on the "Generate OTP" button.

  • An OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number. Enter the OTP in the designated field for verification.

  • Once verified, create a new password and confirm it to complete the password reset process.

  • You can then use the new password to log in to your GST account.

Conclusion

The GST portal serves as a comprehensive digital platform for taxpayers, enabling them to register for GST, file returns, make tax payments, claim refunds, and manage compliance-related activities online.

In addition to offering timely updates, notices, and support services, the portal helps simplify tax compliance and reduces the need for physical visits to tax offices.
