The Goods and Services Tax (GST) portal was launched by the Government of India as a one-stop platform for all GST-related services.  It allows taxpayers to complete GST registration, file returns, make tax payments, claim refunds, respond to notices, and manage compliance online, without visiting tax offices.

The portal is designed to simplify GST compliance and reduce paperwork, offering technical support and real-time updates. It enables tax-paying individuals to submit their GST returns without assistance from a professional.

How to Register on the GST Website?

The first step after receiving your GST certificate is to register on the Indian GST portal. The portal will help you file your regular GST returns and deposit the tax collections with ease:

  • There is an option for new registration under the services tab. After clicking on New registration, select option type of registration, like taxpayer or GST practitioner.

  • Click on "New Registration." Give the necessary information and attach the required files.

  • Upon completion of the form, you will be given a One-Time Password (OTP). Open up the OTP, type the characters from the picture into the box, and thereafter tap the "Proceed" button.

  • You will be provided with an acknowledgement number upon the successful completion of the application forms. After you have been issued a GST number, User ID, and password, the application procedure will be considered complete. This information can be used to access the GST Gov portal.

You can sign up on your own if you pay taxes.

Log in as a New User:

Your first login to the GST portal is treated as a New User login. Follow the steps below to log in as a new user:

  • Simply navigate to the upper-right corner of the GST homepage and select the Login option from the menu.

  • If this is your first time logging in, the instructions at the bottom of the page will instruct you to click the link here that reads "First time login: If you are logging in for the first time, click here to login".

  • You will need to enter the provisional ID, GSTIN, or UIN, as well as the password that was sent to your email address. In addition, fill in the captcha that is displayed, and thereafter hit the "Login" button.

  • The updated credentials page is presented to the user. In the Username and Password fields, enter the information of your choosing. After rechecking the passcode, press the "Submit" button to send the information.

  • Once the username and password have been successfully generated, a notification indicating the process was successful will be shown. Now that you have these credentials, you can log in to the authorised GST Portal.

  • If this is your first time logging into the authorised GST website, you will be requested to complete a non-core amendment application to provide information about your bank accounts. To edit the file, use the "FILE AMENDMENT" button.

  • The editable form of the application is presented, and the form for non-core fields is made available for alteration. You may make changes to the information on the bank accounts page by clicking the "ADD NEW" button and then completing the application.

Log in as an Existing User

You will create a username and password for your GST account on the Portal. All the subsequent logins for filing and depositing your GST collections will use the login ID and password under the existing user section. Follow the steps below to log in as an existing user:

  • Simply go to www.gst.gov.in, which is the official website for the GST.

  • Click on the "Login" button that is located on the right-hand side of the portal.

  • After providing the required information (username, password, and captcha code), go to the next step by clicking the "Log in" button.

  • After a successful login to the GST, you will be brought to your profile. You may see a rundown of your GST credits, your 'FILE RETURNS' page, your 'PAY TAX' tab, your Annual Aggregate Turnover (AATO), any notices or orders you've received, and any stored forms.

How to Generate a New Password for GST Login?

Forgetting your GST password is not uncommon. You should keep the password stored in a vault or a safe digital locker. Also, follow the steps given below to change your GST login password. You will need your registered mobile to receive OTP:

  • On the page where you log in, there is a link labelled "Forgot Password" that you may use to establish a new password if you've lost track of the one you had previously

  • You will be prompted to enter the Username that was used to register the account in a window that pops up

  • After entering the username and captcha text, click the "Generate OTP" button to proceed. An OTP will appear on your registered mobile number.

  • After entering the verification code that was sent to you, you will finally be able to change the password that you use to log in to your GST account.

The GST serves as a comprehensive support system for taxpayers, offering quick resolutions to queries along with timely government updates and alerts.  It allows users to reply to such notifications. Taxpayers can easily file their returns independently by using the GST portal
